Angular 14 innovations
MDC Web Integration
Angular Material components can be optimized through MDC Web integration. With the help of MDC Web (developed by Google), the creation of Material Design components can be simplified. By accessing an extensive library, so-called “primitives” can be reused.
Angular Tests
Since Angular 14 has not been released yet, the dev team is currently testing some aspects. Among other things, they are probably evaluating the migration of the code base to the angular/angular mono repository and the switch from Angular DevTools to Bazel, as well as the integration of the existing processes and the CI pipeline.
Publication of extended guides and insights
Angular plans to implement more in-depth guides on change detection in the future. Future implementations will introduce content for performance profiling of Angular applications. This includes insights into how change detection interacts with Zone.js and when it is triggered. Performance optimization will also apparently be further explored.
Ergonomic APIs
The introduction of ergonomic APIs was already planned for Angular 13. These are now apparently to be introduced in the Angular 14 update. A slow initial loading time of web applications is a thorn in everyone’s side. With the help of ergonomic code splitting APIs, this time is to be reduced in Angular 14. This goal is to be achieved with the help of granular code splitting at the component level.
How does the Angular 14 update work?
1. Find out your own Angular version
The first step for a successful Angular update is to find out what the current version of Angular is. This can be easily checked with the “ng version” command. We recommend checking this before an Angular update to avoid an easily avoidable error.
2. Find the latest Angular version
This step is relatively simple, so we won’t beat around the bush. The latest version of Angular can be found at the following link https://angular.io/docs . In this example, you can see that the latest version (currently) is v13.2.4 (see below).

Alternatively, you can use the CLI command “ng update” to find out which updates are currently available.
3. The actual update
Now that the preparatory work has been done, we can start the actual update.
The scope of the update depends on how complex the respective applications are.
For simple, smaller updates, the CLI command “ng update” is sufficient. After entering the command, you will be guided through the necessary steps, similar to a wizard.

Here, after entering the source version and the target version, you can select the app complexity.
